One of the most interesting facts is that it has over 300 million users in total and still growing; the company has slightly more than one hundred and twenty five million monthly log-ins and is one of the best communication software in the world that helps users to communicate and talk to relatives free of charge. Here are some exciting things you did not know about Skype. They include but are not limited to the following;
The Skype software was developed by three programmers in Estonia, namely; Jaan Tallinn. Ahti Heinla and Priit Kasesalu They had previously launched the highly popular Kazaa Software in 2001; an internet exchange site for videos, songs and pictures.
The company was founded by two entrepreneurs in 2003, namely; Janus Friis from Denmark and Swedish bom Niklas Zennstrom. It experienced phenomenal growth in a span of three years, growing to a customer base of 115 million customers before eBay (an American online auction house) took it over in 2006 at a cost of S3.1 billion; they did hope that the technology would help its users authenticate their transactions. Did you also know that after the acquisition of Skype. eBay housed the company in a small Victorian house in the eBay campus and aptly called the building "The Skype Inn".
Skype has changed the way the entire world communicates and has completely obliterated the age long notion that distance can keep you apart; it allows people to participate in life changing events, and witness earthshaking happenings all over the world; it does all these things effectively and efficiently, with minimal interruptions if any to your day to day activities; it basically keeps us together, irrespective of the geographical distance that may keep us apart.
One of the things you did not know about Skype is that it did get 4 1 million users during its first quarter in business. This number grew almost 5 times to 19.8 million users by the end of its first year in business. In fact, the company could not hire fast enough, lacked meeting rooms and employees worked from the floor, bean bags, stairways and corridors.
It is also interesting to note that Skype made its maiden appearance in a dictionary in 2005; it appeared in an Austrian dictionary. Skype also in its start up years was well known for the parties it would throw; the employees were expected to wear a red and white football jersey. Sometimes they would have the founders of Skype to tend the bar. The employees also cycled, shot some paintballs and raced on Go karts. eBay later sold 70% of its stake to other investors in 2009; this consortium included Silver lake partners, Canada Plan Pension Investment Board and both Friis and Zennstrom They went ahead to dismantle the product and develop a network that could work on the ever growing mobile telephony network. The new VOIP technology that Skype opened up was an extremely cost-effective model that totally eliminated the need of expensive and costly infrastructure investments that other business models would have required; it was thus easy to implement, deploy and maintain. Skype initially announced in August 2010 its intention to go public; this announcement was however, delayed due to some management change at the very top level of the company. Skype was later purchased by Microsoft in 2011.
All you need to get started with Skype is a webcam that will allow people to see you; an internet connection and a computer or mobile device that has speakers and a microphone or a headset attached to it. There are a number of free services that are on offer, opening a Skype account and getting the latest downloads will not cost you a dime, making voice and video calls to anyone else on Skype is also free. Instant file sharing and messaging are also free.
There are also a number of services that one pays for, these include the following; making calls to landlines and mobiles worldwide is offered at relatively low rates. Making of video calls to more than one person and a maximum of ten people can be done at relatively low costs whereas sending text messages can be done by paying just a few pennies.
Skype does work on many devices and thus can allow you to stay in touch at home, at work or on the move. The technology can be used on your mobile phone, a tablet, using your Television at home or via your home phone; it thus does not matter the kind of your device either you or your contact is using; you can still have a chat with them on Skype.
Skype can be used on both mobile devices and PC based internet connections. Broadband connections are highly recommended as it improves the quality of both voice and video calls If you decide to use a mobile device it is recommended that you use Wi-Fi or implement an appropriate data plan from the mobile provider of choice.
